Worst Book to Movie Adaptation

I'll go with the Da Vinci Code here.  While not great literature by any stretch of the imagination, it is a page turner.  Somehow the film-makers found a way to make it borning.  I stopped watching mid way through.  'nough said!

  1. I'd nominate Twilight, but then I'd have to admit I actually read the book (and the book was plenty awful on its own!) Jas and I made it through 15 minutes of the movie before we had to turn it off.

  2. Aaah yes...Twilight. Happily, haven't read the book, but did watch some of the movie on the plane once (hour ten when you're starting to get tired and defenses are down). It was awful! Leo argues for the Golden Compass.

  3. As Kristie has said, my pick would have to be The Golden Compass. This was a series of books that I absolutely devoured, as they epitomized what good science fiction/fantasy should be.
Whereas the movie was pretty much poop on a stick.

  4. I don't usually have a problem with book to movie adaptations. I go in reminding myself (forcefully, sometimes) that it's going to be different, and I watch the movie as a whole separate thing from reading the book. I get disappointed that some things are changed or left out, but it doesn't usually bother me enough to get me all riled up (I'm actually having problems thinking of a movie that did). I loved the Golden Compass books as well, but the movie, while not great, didn't bother me too much.

That said, I won't watch The Book Thief, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, or The Time Traveler's Wife, because I liked the books so much. I'm worried the movies will ruin the emotional impact the books had on me.

  5. I have heard that they really messed up The Time Traveler's wife! So good call there... I've not seen it either.
